Seasonal cleansing; your wellbeing depends on it!

Four times a year when the seasons change it is wise to do a cleanse, to detox your body. On a daily basis, all of your organs and your 11 systems are under so much pressure from an accumulation of physical and emotional toxins. Your 11 systems include your immune, digestive, skeletal, muscular, cardiac, nervous, endocrine (hormonal), integumentary (skin), nervous, lymphatic and respiratory. That is a long list and a bit of a minefield to negotiate by yourself so that is where our Rejuv Lifestyle tips will help you.

All of these systems will function better by having a seasonal cleanse and toxins have a chance to exit your system. Even simply eating 3 meals a day puts a lot of pressure on your digestive system and just like you wouldn’t drive your car for 30 years without having it serviced, so too you need to seasonally cleanse your body. A seasonal cleanse four times a year is a great lifestyle habit to adopt so you implement a long term disease prevention strategy of life. The main systems to focus on when doing a cleanse is your digestive, lymphatic and urinary systems, for if these systems are functioning correctly the whole system is likely to have a positive shift into vibrant health. The colon is often referred to as the sewerage system of the body and you may have heard the phrase ‘death or disease begins in your colon’? The average person has 2 to10kg of waste in their bodies at one time and when food spends too long in your system fermentation occurs, inviting the overgrowth of yeast and parasites.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney (NIDDK), Americans alone spend $725 million on laxatives annually, which tends to make their problem worse in the long run anyway. This year alone the American Cancer Society states 569,490 Americans will die from cancer. That’s about 1,500 people per day suffering and dying from cancer, with most diseases beginning in the colon.

The British Journal of Cancer’s latest report revealed that 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in the UK and USA in their lifetime. According to cancer research UK ‘Every four minutes, someone in the UK dies from cancer’. Lung, bowel, breast and prostate cancers together accounted for almost half (46%) of all cancer deaths in the UK in 2014. A study done in the NHS in 2016 revealed that 1 in 20 people develop bowel cancer and 64% of these cases could have been avoided if more care was taken with their diet and stress levels. So how do you avoid becoming a statistic? Eat and live clean 85% of the time and do seasonal cleansing.

The entire digestive system runs from your mouth to your bottom and is approximately 30 feet or 9 meters tall (the average height of a 2 storey home). Your digestive system includes your mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon (large intestine), liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. The small intestine is the largest part of the digestive system at about 20 feet long, which is about as long as three average 6-foot men! It is in the small intestine that most digestive processes take place and where most of the nutrients are absorbed into the body. The liver, pancreas and gall bladder empty secretions into the small intestine to help break down food and allow the body to use it properly.

The liver is our largest solid organ (the skin is the largest non-solid organ) and one of the hardest working organs in your body. The liver has many functions but the three main ones are to clean your blood, produce bile to aid digestion and to store glycogen (a form of glucose used for energy), vitamin B12 and iron. Another little-known function of the liver is the transportation of blood that has just been enriched with vitamins and minerals during digestion. After eating or drinking a healthy whole food, all the goodness passes from the intestines into the blood, passing through the liver where it makes sure all ingredients are in in the perfect form so the body can utilise them. Whatever parts of foods or drinks the body doesn’t need will be separated into two exit avenues, either back to the intestines to be eliminated through your stool or through the kidneys and out through your urine.

Signs your digestive system needs a spring clean:

I often ask my patients are they tired or toxic? Fatigue is one of the first signs that your digestive system may need a spring clean. Other symptoms of a toxic digestive system include wind, bloating, constipation, IBS, anger/ irritability, depression, poor concentration, over-heating, jaundice, depression, irritability, anxiety and headaches.

Many people buy into the advertising and do a liver cleanse/detox pack they find at any health food store, but what is not explained is that all chemicals/wastes the liver decides are not allowed to enter the body need to be eliminated through your urine in the kidneys or through your stool via your intestines.

This means if you simply detox your liver you put added pressure on your unsuspecting kidneys and intestines (which are no doubt already fatigued and toxic just like the liver) and the overload of toxins will be reabsorbed back into the body. You wouldn’t shake a dusty rug inside your home with all the windows closed, would you? Your home would be filled with more dust than ever. Taking care of your 11 systems on a weekly basis and doing seasonal cleansing is a much better way to live rather than that annual post new year quick liver cleanse.

So how do you do a seasonal cleanse? Here is a sample plan with our top tips that you can do over 7-14 days (depending on your schedule)

Summary: For the next week or two the aim of the game is to only eat plants, so mainly fruits and vegetables and to do intermittent fasting so that you take the pressure off your digestive system and give your body a chance to heal. This will be in the form of veggie juices, salads, raw veg, soups, vegan protein powder, herbal teas, our detox water recipes and whole food supplements at each meal to facilitate the removal of toxins. The timelines I gave are guidelines for I feel it is really important that you listen to your body during your cleanse. If you don’t feel hungry stay with the juices if you feel your blood sugar dropping have a handful or two of nuts with a few dates or an apple. We are all different and have varying blood sugar baselines so you need to be kind to yourself & treat your cleanse as a gentle dance into wellness, not a black and white boot camp mentality. Just eating veggies will mobilize enough toxins but it is highly likely your detox pathways are clogged and this is why you need to supplement.

Here is an example of what an average day looks like:

6-7 am First thing: 1 glass (250ml) of pure water, followed by 1 pint of Rejuv Detox Water = 500ml water + juice of half a lemon + 1 tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar (cloudy) + 1 pinch of cayenne, 1 pinch of cinnamon + ginger to taste + + 1 soup spoon of agave syrup

7.30-8 am am Breakfast: Fresh veggie juice 500ml; 6 celery stalks + 1 cucumber + 1 cup of broccoli + 1/2 bunch of parsley or coriander + 1/2 romaine lettuce + 1 green apple + juice of 1/2 lemon + ginger to taste + 1 heaped teaspoons of The Super Elixir super-greens powder + 2 Rejuv Liver clear capsules + 3 Rejuv Para-Cleanse capsules

Skin brushing before your shower

10-11 am Mid-morning: 2 x 500ml Rejuv Detox Waters + 1 handful of organic raw almonds or walnuts if you’re feeling low in blood sugar

Here’s the second recipe of another Rejuv Detox water; 1 litre of purified water + a handful of lemons and limes, a handful of blueberries, fresh mint and a teaspoon of cloves. Enjoy! Don’t forget 3 litres of our detox waters each day.

Exercise: Move your body each day for at least 30 minutes. This can be anything, walking, gym, dancing, classes, swimming, climbing- anything but make sure you enjoy it for life is too short to do something you hate each day. Don’t forget to exhale for we need to oxygenate your body & most of us shallow breathe each day, holding onto toxins. Sweating is also key to help release toxins choose an exercise that makes you sweat & or use a sauna each week to give your body an extra avenue to release toxins. FIR saunas are the best, then dry & then wet saunas. 30 minutes 2-3 times a week is best.

1-2 pm Lunch; If you choose the salad, be mindful of your eating, chew each mouthful 20 times & put your cutlery down.

Another juice the same as breakfast (500ml)

OR Superfood salad with leaves of your choice + cucumber + onion + raw asparagus + raw broccoli + 1/2 avocado + 1/2 tablespoon of pumpkin seeds + handful of almonds + olive oil + cloudy apple cider vinegar dressing

OR Vegan Protein shake: 400ml unsweetened almond milk + 1 scoop of vegan protein powder (Welleco Nourishing Protein chocolate or vanilla) + if you have a blender add in a handful of spinach + 1 handful of berries of your choice


3-4 pm 1 hour or more after lunch: Second juice of the day (which you could buy from any juice bar) 300-400ml carrot + beetroot + celery + spinach + lemon

Tip: Shake or laugh off your afternoon slump! It’s natural to feel a little low in the afternoon due to the body’s circadian rhythms so instead of reaching for the caffeine have another detox water & oxygenate your body. You can do this with deep breathing (focussing on the exhale) or go for a quick 10-minute walk or bounce or at least have a good old laugh for this is amazing at oxygenating your body. I keep a mini-trampoline in my office so if I start to feel flat I bounce for 10 minutes (or jump on the trampoline with my kids when home) & this sorts me out.

5-6 pm 4th detox water of the day (500ml) – that means you hit your 2L water goal for the day and all the other sips you add in are a bonus
